Specifically, coconut oil is an oil extracted from the dried flesh of a coconut known as the copra. Depending on the specific type of coconut oil being made (refined versus virgin or extra virgin coconut oil), additional processes may be followed to create the product. However, all coconut oil is more-or-less the same in terms of its make-up. Coconut oil contains a number of macronutrients (namely fats) as well as some other components, such as caprylic acid.

Many people are aware of and learning about coconut oil and its potential benefits for the skin and hair, with "coconut oil hair," and "coconut oil skin" being among the most common search queries on Google, but very few realize the possible benefits it can provide when it comes to overall brain health and function.

Understanding Brain Function and Healthy Fat

You may already know that your body needs healthy fats, but did you know that this also applies to your brain? In fact, low-fat diets can be detrimental not only to a person's overall physical health, but to brain function and mental health as well.

More than any other organ in the human body, the brain needs fat. In fact, the brain itself is made up of more than 50% of its weight in fat. "Feeding" unhealthy fats to the brain (such as trans fats) can actually damage your brain cells and reduce their lifespan, whereas healthy fats (such as those found in coconut oil) can improve overall brain health and function.

How Coconut Oil Helps With Brain Health

Specifically, coconut oil is great for the brain because it contain high levels of medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs), which "are critical for the development of the human brain[...] but are rare in the typical modern diet."

Unfortunately, most vegetables and other oils on the market are higher in long-chain triglycerides, which cannot be as easily broken down and used by the brain. Furthermore, when broken down, MCTs have the ability to be used as backup energy for the brain; because the brain is not able to "store" energy like other parts of the body, this is vital to brain health and function.

Coconut Oil and Dementia Prevention

In addition to promoting better overall brain health, several studies have suggested that coconut oil could actually work to prevent disorders such as Alzheimer's and even dementia. coconut oil for dementia image 2.jpg

Take, for example, the case of one neonatal physician known as Dr. Newport, whose husband was suffering with early-onset Alzheimer's. She began to incorporate coconut oil in addition to supplemental MCT oil into his diet each day and saw after just a couple of weeks that his brain function as improving. Overall, she has noted that coconut oil and its MCTs helped to slow down the progression of his disease. She even went on to author a book on the subject.

It is also worth noting that Alzheimer's accounts for up to 80% of all dementia cases, so treating Alzheimer's early on could help to slow down or even stop dementia from developing later in life.

In addition to this individual account, a coconut oil dementia study conducted by the University of Oxford also found that "although the effects of coconut oil may be temporary, Alzheimer's and dementia patients have indeed seen short-term benefits resulting from its use."

So while there is no definitive way of saying that ingesting a certain amount of coconut oil per day will absolutely prevent somebody from developing dementia later in life, it is pretty safe to say that the answer is to the question of "is coconut oil good for dementia" is a resounding yes; is safe and healthy amounts, it can improve brain function and reduce the risk of dementia and Alzheimer's by providing the brain with the fuel it needs to create and maintain healthy cells.

Incorporating Coconut Oil Into Your Diet

For those who are interested in adding coconut oil to their diet as a means of promoting brain health, you may be wondering about the suggested coconut oil for dementia dosage. This can vary from one person to the next, and it's important to be careful about coconut oil intake due to its high calorie and fat levelscoconut oil helps dementia image 1.jpg

For most people who want to use coconut oil for brain health, however, between three to five tablespoons per day is the recommended amount. Before you begin to add it to your diet for brain health, however, it is never a bad idea to speak to your physician, especially if you are overweight or have heart health issues.

Wondering how to add coconut oil to your diet? There are so many options. Because it doesn't have much of a taste, many people will actually just take it by the spoonful. However, the beauty of coconut oil is that it is very versatile and can be used in a number of ways while cooking and preparing food.

Consider, for example, using it as a substitute for vegetable oil or olive oil while cooking. It can also be added in small amounts to your morning oatmeal without changing the taste much. Some people also like to add it to their coffee or daily smoothie, and it can be easily used in baking as well.

The thing to be aware of when using coconut oil is that it remains solid around 65 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit, so it will be a solid at most room temperatures. It melts easily once placed into a warm sautee pan or added to a warm liquid.

Overall, most research leads us to believe that coconut oil is great for brain health and can even be effective in preventing or delaying Alzheimer's and dementia. Although limited research has been done, it is anticipated that researchers will begin to focus more on the power of coconut oil and brain health in the future, especially as some doctors are now turning to it for treatment of other brain disorders as well.
