A study on 38 men taking 2 mg of controlled release melatonin produced reduction of blood pressure by 6 mm HG and 3 mm HG for systolic and diastolic pressure respectively.

6. Vitamin C –

Studies of hypertensive patients show that they typically have lower serum levels of vitamin C. This is because lower levels of vitamin c appears to cause a higher activity of the angiotensin converting enzyme which is responsible for raising blood pressure. Supplementation of vitamin C has proven to lower systolic blood pressure by about 4.8 mm HG. Vitamin C supplements lower blood pressure by improving the rate at which nitric oxide activity is restored. This in turn improves dilation of the blood vessels and causes a reduction in blood pressure levels.

There are a number of studies that have been done that demonstrate the efficacy of Vitamin C supplementation in lowering blood pressure. A study done in Norfolk consisting of 21,000 participants showed that persons with the highest serum Vitamin C levels had a 22% less chance of having hypertension than persons that had lower levels.

One study done with 2419 male participants showed that the men with the lowest serum levels of vitamin C were 2.4 fold more likely to have a stroke within 10 years with higher risk for men that were overweight and already hypertensive. Research findings published in the Lancet found that the elderly can benefit from supplementing with 600 mg of vitamin C along with their treatments to provide lowering of systolic blood pressure by about 20 mm HG within a month.

7. Garlic & Parsley

 8. Calcium -

Calcium plays a large role in a number of processes that affect blood pressure. It plays a role in blood vessel dilation, nerve conduction, muscle contraction and blood clotting. Calcium also works in promoting the excretion of sodium which in turn helps to reduce the retention of fluid. So persons with calcium deficiency tend to have higher blood pressure and are at increased risk for stroke.

40 studies with approximately 2500 participants taking an average daily dose of 1200mg of calcium saw reduction in blood pressure of around 1.86 / 0.99 mm HG. Interestingly so, persons with a lower intake of around 800mg or less per day saw a greater reduction in blood pressure levels of 2.63 / 1.30 mm HG. With a typical supplement providing between 500 and 1000 mg of calcium one can see benefit except if you are already taking an anti-hypertensive medication classed as a calcium channel blocker.
